Consumers have many choices when it comes to purchasing gifts
for their friends, co-workers, and loved ones at Christmas time.
Depending on the age of the recipient, the range of gift
categories can be massive. For example, if one is purchasing a
gift for a young child, under the age of 6, the gift options can
range from clothing to toys. If, on the other hand, one is
purchasing a gift for an adult male or female the choices can
range from tools to more personal items such as sexy lingerie,
shoes, or couple games. Why do people purchase gifts for
Christmas? Based on how we have been raised in our society, a
great majority of Americans either buy the gifts because of
their emotions or feel a sense of obligation to buy gifts for
their friends and relatives at this special time of year.
Ironically, we, as Americans, look forward to that special time
of year when we can open our hearts and let someone we know that
they are special and appreciated. Giving and receiving gifts at
Christmas makes us feel as though we are an accepted part of our
society. It makes us feel good inside; giving us a sense of
pride and accomplishment to be able to give to others. Let's
face it, almost everyone looks forward to December and
Christmas. It fills us with hopes and dreams of things to come.
The excitement can be felt in the air and the joy it brings is
immeasurable. There is another reason we purchase gifts during
the Christmas holiday season and it is economically based.
Economically, it lowers unemployment because additional
personnel are needed to handle the additional traffic through
the retail outlets and sites. Additionally, it lowers inflation,
creates a boom the stock market which in turn makes people
wealthier, and raises consumer confidence. People's shopping
methods have changed over the years. At one time, everyone made
a trip out to the local department store or outlet and spent
hours picking out each individual gift, price was not a factor.
Now, consumers seek the highest quality goods and the lowest
prices and many do much of their shopping on the internet. With
all the options people now have when it comes to purchasing
gifts, they are able to purchase what they want, when they want,
and at a discounted price. This type of shopping only encourages
us, as a society, to do what is traditional and that is
purchasing gifts for our friends, co-workers, and loved ones at
Christmas.
